Elder flower has traditionally been used for chest congestion and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Yarrow flowers are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Yarrow tea was often used to cleanse and heal wounds and improve circulation. It has been traditionally combined with elder flowers for acute bouts of cold and influenza.

Peppermint is antiseptic and often used to reduce inflammation in the throat and to help alleviate common respiratory symptoms and ease any digestive upsets. WM Cook described it as a diffusive stimulant with relaxing properties. It can also be used to assist with fever by encouraging sweating.
